It was in 2016 that we had a profound moment after watching one of the Ted talks on bees by Marla Spivak, a distinguished Entomologist and Professor from University of Minnesota. This video made a big impact on the whole team.

We were shocked by how close our world was to an impending ecological disaster that would have a far-reaching reverberations for the present and future generations.

Through the same video we came to know that bees are the #1 pollinators for flowering plants, various crops, fruits, and vegetables, and that over one-third of the food production in the world is directly dependent on pollination by bees. And if the bees were to become extinct, our food production would suffer greatly.

How Things Stand?

So, it became clear that our wellbeing was closely tied to the survival of bees. We then looked for information on the steps undertaken by authorities. The developments however, don’t look so optimistic as we see that this issue is not exactly the priority of lawmakers.

As recent as Dec 2019, a proposed bill H.R.1337 — 116th Congress titled Saving America’s Pollinators Act is lying with the House Committee on Agriculture. On a state level, in our home state of Maryland, the laws give the bee keepers the right to shoot bears if they threaten the hives.

While this does provide help in keeping the hives safe but it does no favor to the problem at large of saving the bees.

Bees: Not a priority

As things stand, the protection of bees though important is not exactly in the top tier priority of the local, State or Federal authorities. .

We realised that we could not sit idly, but what could we do? Then it came to us that we were placed remarkably to do something about it as a natural skincare company. We got into a serious discussion with our entire team of over 30 people spread over 4 countries.

What we Decided to Do?

It was then decided that we should make a beginning by using our experience, skill and expertise to create a new line of skincare products that would provide real benefit to the end customer and be more effective in the promotion of the cause. As most of the honey comes from the Apiaries that are maintained by Beekeepers, it is essential that suitable support should be provided to those who care for the bees.

Evolution of Our Cause

bee- benefits2

We started the project to be centered around honey because of its unique and amazing benefits. The benefits have been known since ancient times, with various bee products such as honey, beeswax, royal jelly, bee stings and others being mentioned in various cultures. In fact, in ancient times, these were used for health, beauty, and religious events.

In the present day, as people are becoming more aware of the problems that synthetic or man-made chemicals can have on their body and skin. This interest has led to an increased demand for the products made with natural ingredients and extracts. People are turning to old remedies with natural herbs that have innate benefits.

This interest has led to an increased demand for the products made with natural ingredients and extracts. People are turning to old remedies with natural herbs that have innate benefits.

As a natural skincare company, we realised this opportunity will be a win-win situation for all – the end customer gets a good product which gives results leading to more demand; we increase production that leads to more demand for the bee based products; this leads to beekeepers getting assured and fair returns, thereby encouraged to increase the production

We talked about how to support the beekeepers and save the bees with our partners and suppliers, and came up with a solution. Instead of donating to an NGO or a charity which works on the bees, we are going directly to the people who are at the forefront of this issue. We have decided to donate 3% of our gross sales to the Bee keeping collective or the Bee Keepers association.

Selection of honey: Why Manuka honey?

While we were certain about honey, we wanted to pick one which would hold true in following results:
1. Scientifically proven benefits
2. Reliability to give consistent results

We therefore got over 25 samples of different varieties of honey from US, EU, Asia and other regions. We found that out of all the samples, there was one which stood out above others in terms of the two parameters. It was Manuka honey.

Not only Manuka honey has high nutrition value but it has high antibiotic and antioxidant properties, which have been the focus of scientific research. In fact, it is one of the few honey varieties to be certified to be used for wound dressing.
Therefore, our team decided to add Manuka honey as one of the principal ingredients in our products.
